Dalgona coffee is a trendy drink from South Korea and something like a reverse cappuccino. The milk is at the bottom and the creamy foam is on top. Perfect for lovers of the foam spooning egg. You only need 4 ingredients to prepare it and the result will bring the café feeling to your home. Just right during the current Corona time.

Here I will show you how to prepare Dalgona coffee in less than 5 minutes.

Dalgona Coffee – The recipe for the coffee trend from South Korea

It seems to me that the Corona period stimulates people at home to experiment with new cooking methods. Those who can no longer go out to a restaurant try out their own cooking. I can only support this trend because I am no different and almost every day I have new ideas about which international recipes I want to try out. Today it was Dalgona coffee from South Korea.

I only learned about this coffee specialty earlier this week through Minu, a friend from India. The South Koreans are probably no different at the moment. And if we don’t come to the café for coffee, then the coffee just comes to us. So it is not surprising that Dalgona Coffee is conquering the world virally via TikTok and Instagram.

The preparation of this inverted cappuccino (milk is at the bottom, coffee at the top) reminds me a little bit of the egg coffee from Vietnam and you only need 4 ingredients.

Update from 05.04.2020: I experimented a little bit and found out that it is important to have a 1:1:1 ratio of the ingredients, otherwise it won’t have a nice foam. Also, it depends on the power of your hand blender how fast the foam is created. With a not so powerful blender, it can take up to 10 minutes

Ingredients for the Dalgona Coffee (2 Persons)

  • 2 tablespoons instant coffee powder* (alternatively very strong espresso)
  • 2 tablespoons of sugar (you can also use less)
  • 300-400ml warm milk
  • 2 tablespoons of boiling water

Preparation of the Dalgona-Coffee

1. Heat the milk in the microwave, for example, and ensures that it does not foam over.

2. Stir the sugar, instant coffee powder and hot water into a fluffy foam. You can best do this with the whisk of your hand blender. If you are using already cooked espresso instead of instant coffee, add less water. The longer you stir the foam, the lighter the foam will be.

3. Now pour the warm milk into 2 glasses and spread the coffee foam on the milk. If you like you can garnish with some cocoa powder or cookie crumbs.

Dalgona Coffee – My conclusion

I think this was one of my fastest and easiest recipes I have posted here on the blog for a long time. The (admittedly few) efforts were worth it and all those who have already tried the coffee are very enthusiastic. Simple things, great effect. I wish you a nice coffee pleasure.
