Vietnamese Egg Coffee – More dessert than drink and in Vietnam a real cult. In the 1940s, the drink was created more out of necessity, when condensed milk was scarce and it was stretched with egg yolk. Today, the viscous Vietnamese coffee specialty is enjoying increasing popularity.

In this recipe, I show you how to make your own egg coffee from Vietnam in no time at all.

Vietnamese Egg Coffee Recipe

The Vietnamese egg coffee „cà phê trúng“ was one of the things I was most excited about on my trip through Vietnam. In Vietnam, you can get good coffee in many different variations almost everywhere. Whether hot or cold, pure or with lots of condensed milk, there is actually something for everyone. If you want to be really unusual, try the „cat coffee“ Kopi Luwak in Vietnam.

Especially in the capital Hanoi, this special coffee is very popular, so I wanted to try it too. I can tell you directly: It was worth it! More of a dessert than a coffee, the taste of egg coffee is surprising at first, then really delicious.

For all those who don’t want to go to Vietnam, I have the recipe for Vietnamese egg coffee here.

Egg Coffee from Vietnam

Ingredients for the egg coffee

  • Espresso or strong coffee
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 2 tablespoons condensed milk (= 10g coffee cream)
  • 1 teaspoon honey

Preparation

1. First brew the espresso and pour it into a larger cup.

2. Mix the egg yolk with the condensed milk and honey and beat everything together with a whisk to a firm foam.

3. Spread the egg foam on the espresso and sprinkle some cocoa powder over it for decoration. Have fun spooning.

Vietnamese Egg Coffee – My Conclusion

That something can be prepared so quickly and so easily and at the same time be so surprisingly tasty is something that doesn’t happen every day. For my part, I’m glad that I tried the egg coffee from Vietnam in Hanoi and that I got the basic recipe in the coffee. I will definitely make this Vietnamese coffee more often and maybe eat it together with the delicious Alfajores with Dulce de Leche.

Do you already know the Vietnamese egg coffee? If so, what do you think of this semi-liquid dessert? I look forward to your comments.

Backgrounds to Egg Coffee from Vietnam

The egg coffee Ca Phe Trung was created more out of necessity than condensed milk was in short supply in the 1940s due to the first Indochina war in Vietnam. It is said that the bartender Nguyen Van Giang invented the drink in 1964 when he replaced the missing condensed milk with beaten egg yolk and served it to his domestic and foreign guests.

They liked the egg coffee so much that Nguyen then went into business for himself and founded his own café. The exact recipe is of course strictly guarded.
