Alicha Wot and Misir Wot

Injera and Wot are a typical Ethiopian food, which is also often served at festivals. The basis is the Injera, a thin, airy flatbread, which reminds of our pancakes in appearance and consistency. It is traditionally prepared with teff flour, but you can also use fine millet flour.

The wot is a kind of ragout or stew, which can be prepared vegetarian as well as with beef or poultry. Both are eaten together with the hand. To do this, one tears off a piece of the injera with the right hand and reaches into the wot. For us Europeans, this is a different way to eat, but at the same time, you save on dishes.

In this recipe, I show you how to prepare the vegetarian Misir and Alicha Wots. You can find the recipe for the injera here. Have fun trying it out

Injera Fertig

Ingredients for Misir Wot

  • 300 grams red lentils*
  • 3 medium onions
  • 2 carrots
  • 3 garlic cloves
  • 1 thumb-sized piece of ginger
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 5-6 small tomatoes
  • 1 tablespoon of Berbere spice*
  • 2-3 tablespoons olive oil
  • some cardamom*
  • 1/2 liter of water
Misir Wot Ingredients

Preparation of Misir Wot

1. Chop the onions finely and fry them in hot oil for about 3 minutes until they are glassy. Then add the Berbere spice, finely chopped garlic and finely chopped ginger and fry for another 2 minutes. You can get the Berbere with a little luck at the market at some spice stands or otherwise on the internet*. Alternatively, you can also make Berbere by yourself .

2. Cut the carrots and the tomato into small pieces as well and put them into the pot together with the tomato paste, the lentils and the water and bring everything to the boil. If you like, you can also add strained tomatoes. Season with salt, pepper and cardamom and let everything simmer for about 15-20 minutes at medium heat until the lentils are soft.

Misir Wot Preparation

Ingredients for Alicha Wot

  • 2 large red onions
  • 1 thumb-sized piece of ginger
  • 2-3 chopped garlic cloves
  • 5-6 medium firm boiling potatoes
  • 2-3 carrots
  • 1 paprika
  • 1 can of chopped tomatoes
  • 4 green chilies
  • 1 tablespoon of Berbere spice*
  • oil, salt and pepper
  • more vegetables of your choice
Alicha Wot Ingredients

Preparation of Alicha Wot

1. Chop the onions finely and fry them in hot oil for about 3 minutes until they are glassy. Stir in a little Berbere spice. Caution: for sensitive palates, too much spice could quickly become too hot. Add the chopped canned tomatoes and let everything simmer at low heat.

2. In the meantime, peel the potatoes, carrots, peppers, chili and ginger and cut them into appropriate pieces. I took purple potatoes for a more beautiful color. You can also use other vegetables, like cabbage or beans.

Alicha Wot Preparation

3. Add the vegetables together with the finely chopped garlic to the pot and let everything simmer for about 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. At last, you only have to season the wot with salt and pepper. Serve the wot together with the injera. Bon appetite.

Ethiopian Misir Wot and Alicha Wot

Ethiopian Wot – My conclusion

While cooking I found out that this Ethiopian food is much easier to prepare than I had thought before. Because you eat everything by hand together with the Injera, you also save on dishes. Practical, right? The fact that you can prepare the wot in the morning and only have to reheat it later makes it perfect for an international cooking evening with friends.
