Scotch Eggs come, as the name suggests, from Scotland. Even though they unfortunately do not contain Scotch Whisky, they are still super tasty and also suitable as finger and party food. A liquid egg core and a crispy breading make the Scotch Eggs even more extra delicious.

In this recipe, I will show you how to prepare Scotch Eggs in less than 30 minutes.

Scotch Eggs Recipe – How to make Scotch Eggs

On the weekend we had again visitors at our home. Since we had only one day before with two small cats family addition, the priorities were not so much to stand for hours in the kitchen. So we needed a simple and easy to prepare meal. Since we still had eggs leftover from our last trip with our VW Camper a few days before, the choice quickly fell on Scotch Eggs.

Scotch Eggs are basically just boiled eggs in a coat of sausage meat, which are breaded and then fried. In Scotland, you can buy them ready to eat in the supermarket and then eat them cold on the hand during your lunch break or picnic. In this recipe, we will show you how to prepare the Scotch Egg yourself.

Ingredients for 8 Scottish eggs

  • 9 eggs
  • 500 grams of minced meat
  • 1 tablespoon of mustard
  • 2 tsp paprika powder
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp pepper
  • 3 tablespoons breadcrumbs
  • 1 teaspoon garden herbs* (optional)
  • 3-4 tablespoons sesame (optional)

Preparation of the Scotch Eggs

1. First boil 8 of the eggs so that they are still soft inside. You can cook them for about 4 minutes at high heat and then take the temperature away and let them stand for another 1 minute. Afterward, quench the eggs with cold water and let them rest for 10-15 minutes.

2. While the eggs cool down, you can prepare the minced meat. Knead the minced meat with an egg, breadcrumbs, mustard, and spices until you get a smooth mixture.  Then divide the mixture into eight parts and press them flat for the next step.

3.The next step is a bit tricky. Try to peel the eggs which are still a bit soft inside. Depending on the degree of hardness you have to take care that the eggs do not break and the liquid egg yolk runs out. Once you have done that, take a part of the minced meat and coat the peeled egg with it, so that you get orange-sized balls.

4. Then you can roll the Scotch Eggs in a mixture of breadcrumbs and sesame seeds to get a nice crust later. Heat the oven to 180° C circulating air or a lot of oil in a pan to deep-fry the Scotch Eggs and bake or deep-fry them until they get a nice brownish crust. We have tried both the oven and the deep-fried version. The result is both delicious, but deep-fried the crust is simply crispier and the eggs look nicer overall.

Scotch Eggs – Our conclusion

The preparation of Scottish eggs is quite simple if you get the knack of the still soft eggs. But the Scotch Eggs can be prepared very well for a party and then only have to go into the oven or deep fryer. The eggs taste great with some tasty dips and crispy oven potatoes.
